There is a phrase "Action speak louder than words". If there is only talk but no action then it does not make any sense. Hence I have made it a point to put thoughts into action. In this section, I shall mention all the activities conducted by me and my Eco club team in creating ecological awareness among the people. I hope the readers will be inspired and start helping the society by volunteering in an NGO or start their own Eco-club. Together we can make God's creation into a beautiful place.
The Eco Club has undertaken various activities like :
1. Plantation drive in our Church compound along with Catechism students. Children planted saplings like banana, papaya, show plants etc.
2. Garbage Segregation & Composting - Sunday School Children children were also taught segregation of garbage into wet & dry waste and how to compost the same.
3. E-waste collection of all electronic items. We have tied up with a certified e-waste recycling company to dispose of e-waste in an environmental friendly way.
4. Plastic bottle collection drive from various communities. We have tied up with an NGO called SEVA. Collected bottles will be utilized to make various items which will be sold by the tribals living in National Park. Hence it will help them to generate income. We have also visited these tribal and saw their work.
5. Drawing competition for children on Eco-awareness.
6. Organizing Eco-awareness day. The main purpose of this program was to create awareness about our Environment to our parishioners. Our Earth is continuously threatened by the impact cause by man. Some of the consequences are Global warming, ozone depletion, climate change and pollution.
7. We have obtained a Dual Com-poster Tumbler for composting waste. Dry flowers obtained from the Church is dumped into this tumbler and is allowed to decompose. It is then added to the plants as manure.
8. We also have created a small terrace garden, the garden consists of various herbal plants which can be used to treat various diseases.
9. Organizing various Eco trek every year especially during the monsoon with the youth and adults to foster love for nature. Here I mention two such treks.
Karnala fort
Dongar Mauli Fort
10. Visit to Godrej Mangroves with the youth and children. Very informative session was conducted on Mangrove trees. Mangroves are beneficial in several ways like preventing flood, providing food and shelter to birds and fishes, has its own ecosystem, absorbs toxic chemicals like cadmium, woods are water resistant and contains tannin, it is also used in Ayurveda. Its fruits are used in preparing pickles. Mud skipper fish and the fiddler crab are indicators of the presence of mangroves.
11. Awareness on Plastic pollution. Banners have been displayed in market area and Church compound.
12. Running the 10 km run for a good cause to save the migratory birds i.e Flamingos and also to conserve mangroves which are depleting at a very fast rate. It was organized by the Wandering souls and Save Navi Mumbai Environement NGO. Hope to run many such events for a good cause. If you find any destruction of wetlands or forest, kindly contact Forest Helpline - Dial 1926.
